Light 'em up
If your notebook isn't blessed with a backlit keyboard, My Glow Keys can ease the pain. My Glow Keys is a set of stickers for your keyboard, using a green tint on a black background. They don't actually glow in the dark; instead they reflect the monitor light to make the keys visible in low-light conditions, similar to road traffic signs. Yes, we know it's bad for your eyes to use a keyboard in low-light conditions, but that doesn't seem to stop us from doing it - whether it's in the bedroom or on an aeroplane. We've got a USB keyboard light, but it's never at hand when we need it and glowing keys seems like an easier solution. We tested out My Glow Keys on our new black MacBook which, much to our annoyance, doesn't feature the backlit keyboard of its big brother, the MacBook Pro. Firstly, take the time to make sure the stickers are straight or it will bug you forever more. Don't put the stickers right against the edge of the keys or your fingers will catch them. We added the stickers to the left half of the keyboard and within a few hours we were keen to put them on the other half. This is partly because Apple uses such a thin, elegant font on the MacBook keys that the large My Glow Keys font seems to leap off the keyboard in comparison. It's also because Apple puts a highly reflective coating on the keys, creating such glare that it's sometimes impossible to see the letters on the keys when there's a bright overhead light at a certain angle. The stickers suffer the same problem, but it's not as pronounced. When we turned off the lights the improvement was striking. The effect obviously isn't as good as a backlit keyboard, but it makes an intolerable situation far more tolerable. Unfortunately, the manufacturers only produce one generic sticker sheet. While they've included options to cater for most PC keyboards, Mac users will lament the lack of Command, Option, Function and Eject keys. The Function keys will be useless for most computers, as they'll cover up the icons that tell you what each key does. The lack of an actual Function key is surprising, but we cut together F1 and End stickers to get Fn. A few stickers, such as Crtl and Alt, come in several sizes and it's worth getting a double set of stickers in case you want two Shift or two small Alt stickers (or in case you damage a sticker). The stickers are made from "waterproof, industrial strength vinyl" and supposedly have a 10-year life span, so they should outlast your computer. If you line up the stickers properly, they don't look too out of place, but they probably won't look quite as elegant as your notebook's original keys. Fashionistas may scorn them, but those of us with a more sensible disposition and ageing eyes will consider My Glow Keys to be a Very Good Thing.
