Paul Thomas Anderson's brutal epic was singled out at Academy Award time for the remarkable performance at its centre: Daniel Day-Lewis' Oscar-winning portrayal of single-minded prospector and oil tycoon Daniel Plainview, whose quest for control over all that he surveys is caught up with the expansionist plans of an equally focused young evangelist (Paul Dano). But it's Anderson's enveloping vision - aided, among other things, by Jonny Greenwood's percussive score - that lingers. He uses Upton Sinclair's novel Oil! as a starting point for a claustrophobic yet expansive depiction of a world of overreaching ambitions and myths of origin. Anderson shot on the same locations that were used in Giant, in which James Dean also played a man with dreams of oil and control: he explores space and place, the minutiae of drilling below the earth and the expanse of landscape above, as well as the fierce desires and machinations of his characters. An intriguing extra is a 15-minute segment that juxtaposes footage from the film with archival footage and photographs used for research: there are striking correspondences between them.
