Jongewaard ruled out by committee
AUSTRALIAN cyclist Chris Jongewaard has missed out on selection for the Beijing Olympics, the Australian Olympic Committee says.
Jongewaard is facing hit-and-run and drink-driving offences relating to an accident near Adelaide last year, which left fellow cyclist Matthew Rex with severe head injuries.
He has pleaded not guilty and is due to face court later in the year.
AOC president John Coates has written to the cyclist saying that his conduct had brought him into disrepute.
" Driving while likely in my view to be under the influence of alcohol and being involved in an accident while in that state are sufficient for me to form the view that your conduct was likely to and did bring yourself into disrepute," Coates wrote.
Jongewaard was knocked back for the Olympic team despite his clear status as the No. 1 Australian rider. He still has the option of appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
